Oxford Conference 2009

Commonwealth Educational Co-operation - Looking Ahead at 50

An important conference was held in Oxford celebrating 50 years of Commonwealth Education on Tuesday 31st. March and Wednesday 1st. April

This conference celebrated half a century of educational co-operation between Commonwealth member states. In 1959, the first Commonwealth Education Conference was held in Oxford and the Council for Education in the Commonwealth was founded.

This conference was led by a distinguished gathering of Commonwealth educationalists including the Hon. Nahas Angula, Prime Minister of Namibia and for many years, an education minister, the Hon Naledi Pandor, Minister of Education of South Africa, Ronald Jones, Minister of Education and Human Resource Development of Barbados, Narcisco Matos from Mozambique, Gujaraj Dhanarafan from Wawasan Open University, Malaysia and a wealth of others. The two presentations can be down loaded by clicking here (for Nahas Angula) and here (for Naledi Pandor). A press release has also been issued, and can be downloaded by clicking here.

Videos of the three Ministers can be seen here. (It is necessary to have broadband to be able to view these videos effectively.) Firstly, Nahas Angula talks about the Commonwealth and the needs of Namibian education.

Secondly, Mrs. Naledi Pandor describes the challenges facing the Commonwealth and its education

Finally, Ronald Jones talks of the importance of the Commonwealth to him and to those in his country
